Lescott ready to fight for new City contract

Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott is keen to show new manager Manuel Pellegrini why he should hand him a new contract.

The 30-year-old is entering the final season of his current deal and is eager to impress Pellegrini after failing to be a first-team regular under Roberto Mancini last season.

After playing 85 minutes in their pre-season friendly against Arsenal last Saturday, Lescott hopes to feature in the line-up for City s Premier League opener against Newcastle United on Monday as he also targets a place at next year s FIFA World Cup should England qualify.

If he (Manuel Pellegrini) does call upon me then I’d like to say I’d give 100 per cent and do his decision justice, Lescott told talkSPORT.

I m in the last year of my contract now so I’ve got …

Bayern Munich 5 Freiburg 0: Heynckes celebrates successful homecoming

Kingsley Coman scored on his 50th Bundesliga appearance to help give Jupp Heynckes a homecoming to remember as Bayern Munich cruised to a 5-0 home win over Freiburg.

Back in charge for the fourth time, Heynckes encountered few troubles in guiding the champions back to winning ways as two first-half goals effectively put the result beyond doubt.

Sven Ulreich proved his value as Manuel Neuer s injury replacement with an important early save from Ryan Kent, with the Bavarian giants taking advantage through Julian Schuster s own goal.

The Freiburg captain became the first player in over 26 years to find his own net in successive Bundesliga matches and the error was compounded when Coman struck prior to the interval.

Alcacer has shown he is a goalscorer, says Barcelona boss Valverde

Ernesto Valverde says Paco Alcacer proved he is a goalscorer as the forward made the most of a rare opportunity to start against Sevilla in LaLiga.

Alcacer, starting in Spain s top flight for the first time since the match against Real Betis on the opening day of the season, scored twice at Camp Nou on Saturday.

Those goals gave Barca a valuable 2-1 victory which ensures they go into the international break with a four-point lead over closest challengers Valencia, having won 10 and drawn one of their first 11 league games.

He got two important goals and we hope that they give him the confidence that strikers need, Valverde said at his post-match media conference.

We are happy with him and for the team. He has not played a lot and he has shown that he is…

No Casillas in Spain squad represents a ´new era´, says Ramos

Sergio Ramos says the omission of former Real Madrid team-mate Iker Casillas from Julen Lopetegui s first Spain squad marks a new era .

Casillas, who left Madrid to join Porto in 2015, has been a mainstay of the Spanish national side since making his international bow in 2000, going on to record 167 appearances.

The 35-year-old captained the national team to triumphs in two consecutive European Championships and the 2010 World Cup, but, having seen his number one spot taken by David de Gea at Euro 2016, the veteran has now missed out on the squad for qualifying fixtures against Belgium and Lichtenstein.

And, despite saying it feels bizarre to join-up with a Spain group that does not include Casillas, Ramos believes the change represents the start of an exciting e…

Maybe Deschamps changed his number? – Laporte claims France boss did not return his messages

Aymeric Laporte has claimed Didier Deschamps did not reply to his messages before the defender switched international allegiance from France to Spain.

Manchester City centre-back Laporte declared for La Roja last month after being granted Spanish citizenship, leading to him being included in their 24-man Euro 2020 squad.

Laporte represented France at youth level, including the Under-21s, but was never handed a senior cap despite being called up by Deschamps.

The 27-year-old has made a positive start to his Spain career by helping his side to three clean sheets in his first four caps, while also scoring in last week s 5-0 win over Slovakia.

Spain finished second in their Euro 2020 group and are on course to face France in the quarter-finals should the heav…

Casillas reaches 100 Champions League wins

Iker Casillas has followed Cristiano Ronaldo into the Champions League history books by recording his 100th victory in the competition.

Casillas was beaten twice as Porto ended their Group D campaign away to Galatasaray, Sergio Conceicao s men running out 3-2 winners in Istanbul.

It means the veteran goalkeeper is only the second player in Champions League history to win 100 games, joining former Real Madrid team-mate Ronaldo in reaching the landmark.

Casillas, who joined Porto in 2015, won the Champions League title three times during a hugely successful spell at Madrid.

100 Iker Casillas has become the second player in the Champions League history to reach 100 wins, after Cristiano Ronaldo (100). Myth.
